Run through the Winter with RWM’s Boston/Spring Marathon Training Class

By EVA DUNN-FROEBIG

The violence at the Boston Marathon in April made runners even more determined to show the world that terrorism won’t stop us from running. Days after the 2013 Boston Marathon, runners declared that they would run in Boston in 2014. Many of our local runners used Run Wild Missoula’s Missoula Marathon to qualify for the Boston Marathon. Now local runners can stay motivated to run all winter and train for the Boston Marathon with Run Wild MIssoula’s Boston / Spring Marathon Training Class.

The class starts on Thursday, December 19 at 5:30 p.m. with an informational meeting at the Runners Edge basement classroom, 304 N. Higgins Ave. Use this info session to meet other local runners, find out what they’re training for and to decide if the class is the right fit for you. The class is coached by Tim Mosbacher, also a former collegiate athlete and high school coach. The class is an advanced marathon training program designed for runners who have run at least one marathon and have a base of 30-40 miles/week BEFORE starting the 16-week training program.

runningThe first training run will take place on Sunday, January 5 at 8 a.m. All runs start from the Runners Edge basement classroom. Run Wild Missoula thanks to the Runner’s Edge for use of their facility.

This 16-week training program meets up to 4 times each week on Sundays at 8 a.m., Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. for speed workouts, Thursdays at 5:30 p.m. for tempo runs, and Saturdays at 8 a.m. Participants don’t have to attend every training run. In fact, many participants of the class only attend the Sunday long runs and use the training class to motivate to stay in shape through the winter.

The cost is $50 for Run Wild Missoula members and $75 for non-members (includes one-year RWM membership). Register at Run Wild Missoula’s website.

Who can sign up? Any age or speed is welcome and encouraged. However, this training is not for beginners; participants must have run at least one marathon and have a base of 30-40 miles/week before beginning the 16-week training program.
