1. Dave McNally
Hailing from Billings, Montana, Dave McNally was a bit of a superstar back in his day. He was a professional baseball player for the Baltimore Orioles back in the 60s and 70s. His record speaks for itself really, as he won two World Championship Series with the Orioles, and is just one out of four players that managed to win 20 games every season from 1968 – 1971.
As a left-handed pitcher, McNally really caused some problems for those trying to connect with his varied pitches. If all of this wasn’t quite enough to justify McNally’s selection to our ‘pride of Montana’ list, we should also stress that he was a three-time All-Star. As one can imagine, he is also in the Baltimore Orioles hall of fame list, making McNally truly deserving of his career accolades.
2. Pat Donovan
Pat Donovan was a rather impressive NFL offensive lineman during his career, so much so that Sports Illustrated has him down as number 4 on the best athletes from Montana of all-time. We believe that Donovan deserves to be ranked higher than this, which is why we have him down at number 2 in this post. He played for the Dallas Cowboys during his NFL days, and he managed to help the team win a Super Bowl Championship in the 1977 season.
These things don’t just happen by accident, and it showed that Donovan was an incredibly influential player out there on the field. He was also part of the famous “Four Irishman and a Scott” while playing for the Cowboys, which just makes his legacy all the more enjoyable to look back on.
3. Dan Mortensen
We’ve covered baseball and football above, but here we have a rodeo world champion in the form of Dan Mortensen. Of course, this sport isn’t quite as popular as the other two on this list, but he is glorified in Montana all the same. Mortensen has won six World Saddle Bronc Championships in his time, all of which were won in the 90s and early 2000s, and this makes him one of the best ‘cowboys’ that there has ever been.
