Blackfoot River Kayaking Challenge

By JASON SHREDER

This weekend the 3rd Annual Blackfoot River Challenge will take place on the Blackfoot River.  The event will include clinics, downriver race/sprints, and a whitewater slalom event.  Brandon, the event organizer said the event is open to kayaks, canoes, and stand up paddle boards.

The event will serve as a fundraiser for the Missoula Food Bank.  The BRC will be taking donations and non-perishable food items.  I think many of us associate hunger with cold weather and always contribute to these types of organizations in the winter.  Let’s not forget that even though it’s warm out people still need assistance. This will be an easy and fun way to give back!

This year’s event will have great water levels and the downriver race is guaranteed to make your forearms burn.  This is also a great opportunity to see what slalom kayaking is all about.  With no course here in Missoula, the sport does not have much popularity.  Some of the best kayakers I know come from a slalom background, focused on technical strokes, great balance, and amazing boat speed.

The event kicks off Friday with a slalom clinic. The competition and food drive start Saturday and Sunday.   Registration is $20 and all proceeds will be donated to the Missoula Food Bank.
