The City of Missoula is run by a 12-member City Council and the Mayor of Missoula, John Engen. The city is divided into six wards with two council members representing each ward. Council members are elected for a four-year term and the terms are staggered by two years in each ward.

Currently the City of Missoula is undergoing a rewrite of the zoning and subdivision regulations, is undertaking a study of the Urban Fringe Development Area (UFDA), is working in partnership on the Downtown Master Plan, and is finalizing a long-range transportation plan.
