Some of you reading this page may not yet be familiar with the Best Place Project. If that’s you, you’re not alone. As members of the Make it Missoula editorial team, we’re pleased to introduce you to this important project that has the potential to positively impact all Missoulians.
So just what is the Best Place Project? In essence, it’s a proposed new strategic approach to economic development that will stimulate desirable growth in Missoula. The project focuses on growth that complements Missoula’s unique assets and livability, increases community wealth, and ensures the right kind of jobs and career opportunities for Missoula’s current residents and future generations.
It’s no secret that Missoula boasts incredible natural beauty and offers a wealth of benefits to its residents. Its scenic setting, vibrant downtown, first-class university, world-class medical centers, and active, intelligent, engaged citizenry, all combine to make Missoula the best place in the Western United States to do business.
But despite Missoula’s many attributes and advantages, our assets have not been effectively conveyed to those making business decisions that could ultimately have a positive effect on our economy. While Missoula’s local economy is solid, it’s not as vibrant and dynamic as it can and should be given all the benefits Missoula has to offer businesses seeking to relocate or expand.
Moreover, other communities in the region and across the country are netting greater results in terms of competition for jobs, companies, and workers that fuel future economic growth and prosperity. Simply put, it’s time for Missoula to take its rightful place among communities that are thriving due to strategically planned economic growth.
The Best Place Project relies upon strong cooperation between Missoula’s citizens, businesses, and organizations to bring new business and jobs to Missoula. However, the focus is on jobs and businesses that are the “best fit” for our community – jobs that enhance our community without jeopardizing all that we love about Missoula.
The Best Place Project will focus on job growth using three core strategies.
1. New business growth by focusing on businesses that are a “best fit” for Missoula
2. Existing business retention and growth
3. Community and asset development to ensure a sound growth infrastructure
