SAVE-IT UPDATE 10/12/11

Have you heard?  Two days ago the Wallstreet Journal posted an article about the increasing cost of Peanut Butter in the next few weeks.   My husband had heard this last week on National Public Radio, so I ordered a case (6 jars) of it from Amazon.com last week.  After arranging it on my shelf today, I thought I should maybe get another case of it but when I went online to order, it had gone up from $11.75 to $25.05!  Guess I’ll be choosy on how much peanut butter I use in the next few months!  I did hear CVS has peanut butter for $2 and Target has an online coupon for 75 cents off Planters’ Peanut Butter which is priced at $1.99 each.  You may want to hurry and stock up before the end of the week!  Spread the word since many moms depend on peanut butter as a major food group!!

SAVE-IT UPDATE 10/8/11

Here is a helpful article about saving money when you are buying Gluten-Free.  I like the reminder that things won’t be as cheap as the non-gluten free counterparts but at least you don’t have to always be paying full price!  Read about it here.

SAVE-IT UPDATE 10/7/11

SAVE-IT UPDATE 9/27/11

Where did this month go to?  Sorry for the neglect…guess all that corn I’ve been picking distracted me from sharing some deals with you!  Anyway, here’s a great deal in preparation for the dry winter coming up…my family goes through a lot of lip balm in the winter so I love this deal!  I haven’t verified if our CVS has these specially marked packages yet or not.  Let us know if you find them!

Look for specially marked packages of Carmex Moisture Plus and then submit this rebate form.   This is a CVS rebate   This offer is good until 12/11 but you’ll want to start looking now.  Even if you can’t find specially marked packages yet, you many want to print the rebate form as they can disappear at anytime!

Thanks to Passion for Savings for the heads up on this deal!

b/c nate is 14 & will be getting his license to drive soon (dec) we are very aware of this issue. as a boy scout he must complete a merit badge for his eagle rank that is all about finances. I think he is learning what is important but what he applies to real life is on his shoulders.
I have changed the way we pay for chores or extra help around the house several times in our kids’ lifetime…family meetings are a great thing. I started with having the kids put 5% in charity & 5% in savings & they could spend the rest at various times (usually 4 times a year after money making holidays – that’s a longer comment for another time). then I changed it when they turn 9 (not sure why this age but it worked). they could spend 1/2 their allowance or “earned” money right away but the other 1/2 had to go in savings & I left it up to them to put money in charity (they usually find something at school to throw money into or at church). I have one child that likes to save his money & rarely buys toys….but he likes expensive things so he has to save longer. I have one child that likes to eat snacks & hot lunches more than I am willing to pay for…his wkly chore money d/n last long. I have one child that has a paper route (once a wkly delivery) that has figured out that if he saves 1/2 of his wekly pay for the next 4 yrs – by the time he has a license to drive. he can afford a car or truck of choice.

I have learned to change things to suit the kids & the times…..not necessarily the way I was taught.

We as parents discuss how long it will take to save for what we “want” but make sure we have enough for the needs.. we don’t discuss our debt load or how much income we or anyone else brings in. we believe it d/n matter – the principles are the same.

teens need to know how to deposit & withdraw money for their bank (we use a credit union) and eventually we will get him a checking acct & get credit built but not yet. we have 4 yrs of h.s. so it will be soon. I don’t think our teen is ready for a “card” or a credit card but by the time he graduates he will – so when do I take that step? not sure yet – when he has a steady income? he wants to work at a boy scout camp all summer for the “experience” so no money coming in. but oh what he can teach those 11yo boys about camping!

thanks for the blog – I recently saved a chunck of money at the grocery store & my boys were very impressed at how fast I found the coupons I needed & d/n make them stand in the aisle waitin gfor me to find it. they like shopping with me & this week’s lessons was how to save me money by NOT asking for anything not on the list. they did well. it was a scout requirement for 10yo so yeah to scouting for teaching the essentials.

I almost bought something online this week – but I chickened out. I hope I can work thru this fear soon :)
